How to adjust Saree for walking and moving

The saree is not the kind of garment, like a t-shirt, that you put on and wear all day and forget about it. Draped clothing is about constant adjustment and movement. But this is the charm of it. The pallu is made to be swept around back and front, tucked in at the waist when you`re working, opened up and thrown over the shoulders like a shawl, or covering the head and neck and arms against the hot sun. The saree is a dance of fabric.

One of the things that is the hardest to master is walking fast in the saree, going up stairs, down stairs - you`ll feel the fabric tugging at your calves and this will mess up your stride

Climbing
Using your left hand and grab the pleats - pretty much level with your crotch and lift up, use your left hand to lift the bottom hem of the saree up to mid calf. This helps a lot when going up stairs, and keeps the bottom of your saree clean. This is a beautiful graceful gesture that is part of wearing the saree.

General walking
Indian ladies do not walk as fast or with as long a stride as westerners. This is one reality not to be overcome. Strolling is however, a good thing, especially in a hot climate. For faster paced walking you can just pick up either the pleats and tuck them in a bit higher or if you want the full length aesthetic and swish, you can discreetly lift the saree and petticoat by grabbing a handful of fabric just below the left hip and holding it up a few inches. This is often enough to prevent "saree tug". If you must motor unhindered, you can tuck your handful into the waistline. Silkier cloth is easier to walk in because the fabric slides rather than tugs against itself. But you must pin the pleats and shoulder or you will experience "saree migration".

Adjusting the tightness of the upper drape
The top border of the saree that drapes across your chest tends to loosen with wearing. You can just pull the last wrap of fabric out of the waist and fold it once and tuck it in again over your left hip.

Wraping a Saree - some Useful tips

  • For your first time, chose a saree of synthetic material that is easy to drape and wear.
  • You can attach the pleats to your petticoat with safety pins.
  • On the pleating, you can "cheat" and make your first pleat by just folding and then start winding.
  • Most people can never get the first pleat just right. So, after tucking in the pleats at the waist, pull out the first pleat, pull the material towards the right and tuck it behind your back.
  • Some tuck in the pleats right in the center front, and some place them so that they begin at the front and end on the left side. Both ways are correct.
  • You can get someone to kneel on the floor before you and make sure that your pleats are even at the bottom. Then, with them holding the bottom of the pleats, tuck in the top part into your waist.
  • The pallu should come over from your left shoulder and fall on your back.
  • There are many other ways to dress in a saree. you can be creative when you are taking your pallu. For example, You can take it from the back of your right shoulder and let it fall in front, or take it back and let it fall after draping it on your neck. Similarly, there are innumerable ways of draping a saree. Be creative!
  • Normally, the saree is a bit longer in the back than in the front. In the back, your saree should almost reach the floor.
  • You can pin your saree to your blouse just below the right armpit (the side opposite to the shoulder on which you have the pallu), or better a little bit to the back. This prevents the saree slipping off your left breast.

Wraping a Saree - some Fashion tips

  • Try wearing bangles with your saree to bring attention away from your bare arms.
  • You can wear an embellished blouse, and expose it a bit for a more attractive look.
  • Wear the saree long, so that only the tips of your toes show. A short saree with visible ankles does not look very elegant.
  • Wear it with elegant sandals, boots, or any other elegant shoe. No chappels please
  • You can get a beautiful lace-embellished petticoat or add lace to an ordinary one. It looks sexy when accidentally exposed while climbing steps, etc. Such petticoats were worn in India by wealthy women in the times of the British empire.
  • In office Pinup your Saree, this looks smart and is manageable too.
  • For an outing or a function, just pin-up the tip of the saree and let the rest fall on your hand. This gives a very graceful look. But of course the Saree should have a good fall.
  • Cotton, Tissue or any starched Sarees should be ironed properly and at the time of draping, the pleats should be done with your hands pressing and shaping it properly.
  • Put the pin on the back shoulder as this keeps the saree intact and does not show the pin too.
  • Don`t wear a very flared petticoat inside.

Wraping a Saree - some Warnings

  • Make sure that the fall is on the inside near your feet.
  • Make sure that your pleats are clean! Uneven pleats give an awkward appearance.
  • Make sure your pleats are deep enough. Otherwise, you may have problems walking without having them slip out.
  • When bringing the pallu over your shoulder, make sure the bit behind falls above your knee, or you may trip.
  • Be sure that your petticoat is tight! It`s better to be a bit too tight, than too loose. Otherwise, your sari will start sagging, and the pleats will come out.
  • A starched cotton or tissue saree is for the pros, as it can get crushed easily. So is an extremely slinky, hard-to-drape material.
  • The petticoat should never be visible from under the sari when you stand.
